#10. Chakras Explained: A Gentle Introduction to Energy, Balance & Awareness

An introduction to the chakra system through yoga, meditation, and everyday life. Learn how chakras influence balance, awareness, and wellbeing.

In Episode 10 of the Moment to Pause podcast, we begin a new series exploring the chakra system — a framework used in yoga, meditation, and holistic wellbeing to better understand the body, emotions, and inner awareness.

This episode follows on from my previous conversation with Richard, where we touched on chakras in relation to Transcendental Meditation and consciousness.
Here, we slow that conversation down and gently deepen it.

This is not about fixing or activating anything — it’s about listening.

What Are Chakras?

The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means wheel or centre.
In yogic philosophy, chakras are described as energy centres along the spine, from the base of the body to the crown of the head.

Chakras can be experienced as:

  • physical sensations

  • emotional patterns

  • recurring thoughts

  • areas of contraction or openness

They offer a map of awareness, not a diagnosis.

Chakra Balance and Imbalance

When chakras are relatively balanced, we may feel:

  • grounded

  • emotionally steady

  • connected

  • clear

When they’re imbalanced, we may experience:

  • anxiety or restlessness

  • emotional reactivity

  • fatigue

  • feeling “stuck” or disconnected

These shifts are part of being human. Chakras are not static — they change with stress, rest, seasons, and life experiences.

Chakras, Personality & Ayurveda

Chakras also overlap beautifully with personality patterns and Ayurvedic doshas:

  • grounding and stability

  • fire and motivation

  • creativity and movement

Rather than labels, chakras give us language for compassion — towards ourselves and others.

Chakras Across Traditions

Different cultures describe chakras differently:

  • Yoga and tantra view them as pathways of awareness

  • Meditation traditions experience them through stillness

  • Psychology mirrors them through emotional development

Different systems — the same human experience.

Practising Beyond the Podcast

Alongside the podcast, I’m sharing chakra-focused yoga flows on YouTube, designed to support this work through mindful movement and breath.

If you’re based in Melbourne — especially around Ivanhoe — I also run yoga and meditation classes through The Pause Club, a space to slow down and connect with community.

Later this year, I’ll also be hosting a retreat in Vietnam, for those who feel called to deepen this work.
